Happy Halloween, WLAers! It's the most spooktacular weekend of the year, which means a very big weekend is upon us. This edition is so haunted with events, it's creepy. Let's get weird, shall we?

FRIDAY

Want to get the Halloween party started right away? Check out Shilloween Weekend (Chapter 1), a Halloween party presented by the Astoria Music & Arts group. They're bringing you music so frighteningly freaky, you'll never sleep again! Aaron Stoquert kicks off the night with folk songs from the zombie perspective (because our undead friends deserve a voice too). Then The Tarantinos NYC return with a set so terrifyingly good that you may want to rock with the light on for months afterwards. Finally, Static Rising rises from the grave to haunt you with modern psychadelia so nightmarishly awesome (in a good way), you'll scream (with delight, of course).

If you just can't wait to show they world the best Slutty Pumpkin costume they've ever seen, you best hit up tonight's Halloween Contest, where they'll be cash prizes and giveaways all night long -- in addition to some awesome beer and shot specials. Prizes for the costumes go to the people with the sexiest, funniest, most original or overall best costumes. There'll be runner up prizes as well.

If you'd rather avoid the Halloween madness, we've got events for you, too. Check out The Danny Fox Trio tonight. They play original, eclectic compositions with dynamic group interplay and interaction. Almost a mix between a jazz trio, a chamber ensemble, and a rock group, this trio has developed a unique sound that departs from traditional jazz piano format and uses the roles of the instruments creatively. The music draws from wide influences: the quirky rhythms of a Monk tune, the dark harmonies of Scriabin or ethereal chords of Messiaen, the funkiness of a Motown bassline, or the catchiness of a Beatles tune. The trio released its debut record “The One Constant” (Songlines) this past June which was recently featured on WNYC's "New Sounds."

SATURDAY

Its Halloween time -- what better time of year to learn Michael Jackson's Thriller dance? If you've been trying to mimic the moves in the video for years, it's time to try learning the real thing. Taught by Janine Micheletti, this class won't just give you a workout; it'll give you the coolest Halloween dance moves to break out at the Halloween party you go to later that night as well! Because you know no mere mortal can resist the evil catchiness of the Thriller...

In all seriousness, there's nothing scarier than cancer, and this Halloween weekend, you have the chance to help raise money to make it go away for good. Participate, donate or just go see the Barbells for Boobies event, a charity fundraiser that combines physical prowess with a good deed. The event benefits Mammograms In Action, a nonprofit with the mission to provide funding for qualified low-income and uninsured women and men who need screening and/or diagnostic procedures in the prevention of breast cancer. Competitors will be lifting some heavy weights for a good cause, and the event is also going to double as a Halloween Party! So even if you can't (or don't want to) lift barbells, dress up and come over to show your support. Amazing Southeastern European cuisine and adult beverages will be available for purchase.

There are obviously a TON of Halloween parties and costume contests happening in Astori..., but one of the coolest parties will be the Best Fake or Real Beard or moustache competition. This is how it works: Saturday evening at 11pm, there will be a live, in-shop contest for the best fake or real beard or moustache. The winner will be decided by by applause. The prize? An assortment of moustache-themed goodies. Ooh la la. Note: one beard or moustache entry is allowed per person, though, personally, I'd love to see a double 'stache or beard...

SUNDAY

You might be tuckered out from all of the Halloween fun this weekend, but I'll bet your kids aren't. Candy'll do that to you... Try to wear them out at one of two kiddie Halloween Parties this Sunday. Your little monster will love the first party that features complimentary face painting and fun (kiddie) drinks all afternoon. There's even a Halloween costume "contest" at 3pm! The second party goes from 2-4pm, and kids will enjoy music played by a DJ, games, free hot chocolate, free trick or treat bags, and another costume contest with prizes for the winners.

There's nothing better than a Scary Movie on Halloween. Take in a fright flick this Sunday at Sunday Night Cinema, where they'll be showing scary Halloween classics all night long on a giant outdoor projection screen! Enjoy $5 drinks and drafts while you watch a young Jamie Lee Curtis battle Michael Myers in "Halloween", followed by the creepy film "Poltergeist". Bring a sweater and get ready to scream!

Want a good ol' fashioned Halloween creep fest? Check out this Fireside Ghost Story event on Sunday night at the stroke of midnight. You'll take in a round of classic tales of the strange and macabre by Edgar Allen Poe, HP Lovecraft, Flannery O'Connor and more. The lights will be dimmed but for the flickering flames of the fireplace, so proper beverages to steady your tense nerves will be available as Ms. Ali Silva relates these tales of the mysterious and the unknown. This event is free but we recommend coming early to make sure you get a good seat.
