ConEd Impostors: This is Still Happening!

Recently there was a post about Con Ed impostors.

This happened today in our building!  My wife spoke with him briefly and very tersely said she wasn't interested.  I got home shortly afterwards and when she told me what happened I searched for him, but he was already gone.

Please be aware that this is going on and tell your neighbors.  We have friends in Astoria who were just burglarized recently.  This will only stop if we look out for each other.

Does anyone want to talk to me about their experience with these energy scammers? I'm a reporter doing a story on it, deadline is noon on 3/6.  You can reach me at

They pray on the elderley. Mx energey had comewhile my grandmother was still alive. Signed her up for a contract now she was a nice 85 y/o women who whould let any one in. Even when i told her not to. So she let them in they switched her to MX and I have payed outrageous bills since. Now with the contract expiring, i couldnt even cancel unless i proved both her and my grandfather were dead, since the account was in his name. In the end when I closed that account and opend on in my name I was able to go back with con ed as my provider, and hopefully go back to lower bills as well.

Tom, have you read the comments?  What they are doing is not at all "legit."  The introduce themselves as working for ConEd (which they do not), they ask to see your bill (which they should not do, regardless of who they work for), then, given the opportunity, they'll switch your energy supplier.

They were in the 30th Ave neighborhood last Friday night and up by Ditmars yesterday night.

They are legit, but are a pain in the ass, big time.  They are hired by companies that provide alternative to con ed. Problem is they don't stoop coming around, over and over.  They ring bells, knock on doors, get told that we are not interested--next week, or maybe few weeks later, they are back.

These guys are scammers trying to get people to switch to another energy provider, then in a few months they hike the prices up and you're locked into the contract. It's in their paperwork that they can do that. This happened to an elderly neighbor of mine but luckily she called me after they left; she was bullied into it and knew it was a mistake. I read the fine print to her, got on the phone and cancelled the switcheroo (hooray for grace periods). This happened a few years ago and yet they continue to get into buildings when people let them in randomly, ugh.

Called ConEd, turns out these guys may be legit; they just work for one of the new providers that are vying for your utility business via Power to Green program. As long as you do not give them your account info (ConEd would never ask for this, fyi), then you are fine. I enrolled for this program via ConEd site no problem - it's legit and I just had ConEd choose the providers for me. What we Astorian's are seeing is basically unscrupulous business practices for these energy providers taking their "street teams" out in full force to try and convert you to THEIR services. Hope this helps all.

Wow...they have been by my building a ton. I told them I don't get paper bills so maybe that saved me, whew! I did however go to ConEd and see their Power Save program (which is what these kids were talking about) and opted in. It was all legit thru ConEd site, but can anyone confirm this is also not a scam?

Sounds like I got by ok...?

We need to have more awareness to get these people out. We should post signs inall our buildings.
