Our neighborhood is getting trashed.

This is on the corner of 28th avenue and 41st street. It has been like this for almost a month. Our neighborhood is turning into a slum. Shame on the government for letting this happen and shame on the residents who treat the neighborhood like this. Has anyone ever tried to start a beautification group in Astoria. Anyone interested in trying?

Astoria's trash problem has been an issue.  I've made a complaint to Peter Vallone that we need more trash cans as the trash cans on 30th Avenue overflow during the weekends.  I believe some residents through their household garbage in those trash cans.  Something needs to be done as Astoria is such a great neighborhood but it's becoming really dirty.

My boyfriend would love to join. We are close by on 44th street. There are a few older people who sweep the streets over there, and he covers up grafiti at least once a week. Is there any group already?

Shame on the government?

It's not turning into a slum, exactly. It's just more of the kids growing into teenagers...

And everyone knows that teenagers suck.

That said, we should do SOMETHING. Let's ban the motorized bike/scooters while we're at it. I fear for my life.

I tried to start a clean-up group at my co-op and was denied. I also asked someone to pick up after their dog once and was literally screamed at and told to mind my own business even though the dog was making a mess where I live. I'd be interested in doing something about the trash in the area. I'm also tired of seeing the explosion of bagel pieces thrown all over the Ditmars area for the birds.

I don't think "the government" had much to do with this, Nick.

my guess is that this is more indicative of the fact that we have more renters than owners living here...

Nick, unfortunately part of the problem is not enough public trash cans in your part of Astoria - you may want see if Vallon’s staff can get you some...

Nick, If you were looking to get something started I could give you a hand. I run a local meetup group with over 800 members who all live in Astoria (http://www.meetup.com/The-Astoria-Meetup-Group/) perhaps I can put the word out there and see if anyone is interested. Let me know if you want to talk further.
