Last night three candidates for District 22 of City Council squared off at Riccardo's
to address the issues currently facing Astoria residents. We had a superb turnout by WLA and are encouraged by the amount of interest shown in local politics by our members.
So what does City Council do?
The New York City Council is the law-making body of the City of New York. It is comprised of 51 members from 51 different Council Districts throughout the five boroughs. The Council monitors the operation and performance of city agencies, makes land use decisions and has sole responsibility for approving the city's budget. It also legislates on a wide range of other subjects. The Council is an equal partner with the Mayor in the governing of New York City.
Who is running?

Afterwards, fifty or so WLA members, as well as two of the candidates met at 24 Wine Bar
for a casual evening of discussing the issues that face young adults in Astoria. Thanks to all who came out to familiarize themselves with the issues as well as the candidates themselves for taking the time to meet with our members. Whomever your preference, don't forget to cast your vote exactly two weeks from today!
Also, be sure to let us know what you feel the most import issue facing our City Council member should be using the poll on the right column of this page.
