Police are searching for a man who attempted to rape two 27-year-old women in Astoria on Friday night. The suspect followed the two women into their apartment building on 21st St. and (??) Ave., pushed them to the ground, told them to "be quiet, I have a gun", then attempted to rape them.

Fortunately, a 2nd floor resident heard the commotion and came to the building's lobby causing the suspect to flee. Both women were hospitalized with minor injuries and the dirtbag is still on the loose.

Police have described the suspect as a male African American between 20-25 years-old, 6' tall and 185lbs.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website at nypdcrimestoppers.com or texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.

UPDATE (11/9/11 7:30p): Someone posted on our Facebook Page that there is a service called RightRides that provides a free ride home to women and LGBTQ individuals throughout most of NYC. An incredible program that will pick you up from the subway, a friend's house, a bar, a party, almost anywhere, then take you (only) home. They operate from 11:59p-3a Friday and Saturdays. I'm from astoria and can tell you the avenue along 21st street doesn't matter.  None of 21st Street has ever been safe in my 31 years of being in astoria.  It's near Ravenswood Projects, astoria projects and lots of low-income housing.

So Ladies please be alert!  Have a mini aerosol of CHEAP perfume.  You spray this in the offenders eyes and it will hurt ALOT!  Some people are immune to spicy things so pepper spray isn't a good option.

Scary, I remember when Right rides started in BK. It's a terrific company and I will certainly be donating.
