Family and friends have set up a fund for two boys left orphaned earlier this month after their father shot their mother in an Astoria pharmacy, then killed himself.
The boys, Alex, 8, and Nelson, 5, are now being raised by their aunt, who already has a 3-year-old daughter and is expecting twins. The money from the fund will help provide for the children and help them live a "normal" live, says the aunt.
The mother of the two boys, Guimmia Villa, 32, died after being shot twice, once in the face, by her ex-husband, Alex Figueroa, as she worked behind the counter at the Crescent Chemists pharmacy on 34th Avenue. After shooting her, Figueroa ran to his own apartment at the Ravenswood Houses and committed suicide.
The family set up the fund last week after Villa's funeral, where the aunt told The Queens Chronicle that family told the children, "Mommy and Daddy are both in heaven looking down on us."
A website, http://alexandnelsonfund.hostwebs.com, the banner on which reads: "It takes a village to raise a child," was set up to accept online donations via Paypal to help support the two boys. Additionally, checks are also being accepted and made out to the Alex and Nelson Fund, then mailed to: Alex and Nelson Fund, PO Box 6373, Astoria, NY 11106.
