Why Leave Astoria?!

Confirmed: Manhattan burger joint to take over Bizaare

So the curse of The Cup continues with the recent closure of Bizaare Avenue Cafe. But out with the old and in with the new. We heard from a reliable source that the next inhabitant will be Manhattan burger joint, 5 Napkin Burger. If this is true, Astoria will officially be king of NYC's burger scene.

UPDATE (4/14/10): 5 Napkin Burger have begun construction and will be opening in June in the former Cup/Bizaare. They're also opening another (TBA) restaurant next door in the former Campagnola space. Move over Greek food, let the Astoria burger wars begin!

Don't bother going. Extremely pricey to say the least. There was only one other table with customers besides myself and my son. The service left a lot to be desired. I ordered a burger medium and it came rare, almost raw. It took the waitress 20 minutes to come by to ask how everything was. I told her! They comped the burger but I wanted food since I was famished... still am - I just got home from there.

In a wrap:

Prices: High.
Service: Almost non-existent.
Food: If cooked right, might be good but not at those prices.

Hey guys, I have some invitations for 5 Napkin's opening party (free food/drinks) on Tuesday, 6/15--wanted to give you the chance at them first. Who wants one? Reply to me (send me a message, don't post on this thread) with your name and whether or not you want to bring a guest. Will be fun!

I think this is great news and that great space deserves something notable. But it does seem like the restaurants around the Kaufman Astoria area are quickly outpacing the price range of the local clientele - Cafe Bar did away with their low-priced crepe menu, Lucas Steakhouse is pretty high-end, and even Studio Square is on the pricey end of beer gardens. I hope 5 Napkin will offer cheaper prices to reflect the fact that this isn't Manhattan... oh, who am I kidding. I'll probably stop by on special occasions, but not as often as I went to Cup, bad service and all. (I never went to Bizaare - took one look at the menu prices and couldn't ever find an occasion to justify it.)

I think it does have potential. There is the movie theatre there. And lets be honest, that Bizaare place was..just that..bizaare. The mish mash of posters on the outside made it look cheap and thrown together in my opinion. I'm stoked! 5 Napkin burger a block from my house. Shoot, it's closer than the gym is. That will be a problem. I hope for all the people who start working there it does well. I'll support it!

I don't think there's much of an opportunity for most restaurants or bars that are right next to Studio Square. It's low key Manhattan vibe really welcomes everybody in and security is tolerant enough to let you play most drinking games. You would think that something opposite in idea could still attract a decent crowd even if it was right across the street. Nothing in the Bizaare space has been successful yet, which is really a shame because the inside looked great and it was one of the few places in town that had a really good cerviche. I think the problem is that the space is to large for an intimate date night feel but too small for a boisterous beer hall. I hope these new guys can find their niche, I just don't think the size + location is a good equation.

Confirmed? Awesome - I bet it's even better than the original. If not, I'll be there all the time so I can help them get their act together. ;-)
