Just had a second push in at our 6 family house.  Last summer thieves broke into our basement and took a

very expensive bike.  Today they came back and took another one.  They bust open the front basement door, cut the locks, and then leave with them.

This happened on 44th St. between 30th avenue and 31st.  Heads up neighbors!!!  Securely lock your bikes and securely lock your basement doors!!!

I agree that it sucks to feel violated like this, but I don't think it's fair to say, "Watch out Astoria...the neighborhood is changing...not in a good way" because your bike was stolen. I've lived in Astoria (on and off) since 1998 and sure things have changed, in both positive and negative ways, but stealing bikes (and selling them to delivery guys) has been happening forever, and it happens in every neighborhood. I have had two bikes stolen, one from 35th ave /35th st area and one on Steinway and Broadway at 2pm in the afternoon. Now i don't take my bike anyplace where I can't bring it with me or see it the whole time. AND I register all of my bikes with the 114, it takes 2 minutes.

I had my $600 bike stolen earlier this year on 46th st btw 30 and 31 ave. I filed a report with the police and my neighbor got the thief on camera. A few days later when I was walking on Steinway I saw a delivery boy riding my bike...I chased him down grabbed him and called the cops. He didn't speak English but the cop translated and found out he bought the bike for $25 from some guy...wouldn't say who. When I tried to take my bike, The cops said that I couldn't prove it was mine because I didn't register it with them and since he admitted to buying it, it was his. Even though i had pictures the cops wouldn't budge (same officers who took the original report two days earlier) I was not going without my bike so I just gave the delivery boy $40 and rode off with it leaving the cops stunned. Watch out Astoria...the neighborhood is changing...not in a good way.

put a camera in your basement, if they broke in twice, they might try a third time.
