You don't need another reason to watch the Oscars tomorrow night, but I'll give you one anyway: Astoria was featured as the prominent backdrop for two films nominated for Academy Awards.
"Blue Valentine", which starred Best Actress nominee Michelle Williams, featured many scenes filmed here in the neighborhood. The Angelina Jolie movie, "Salt", also shot scenes in Astoria, and is nominated for a Best Sound Mixing award.
As a matter of fact, the borough of Queens was featured in several films that have a good chance of winning awards Sunday night. Nicole Kidman's film, "Rabbit Hole", for which Kidman is nominated for Best Actress, was shot in Douglaston and Bayside, and featured several scenes filmed on Bell Boulevard.
The documentary "GasLand" is also nominated for a Best Documentary award, and includes an interview with Democratic Councilman James Gennaro of Fresh Meadows.
The 83rd Annual Academy Awards are Sunday at 8pm on ABC. Looking for a place to watch the awards here in Astoria? Check out this Oscar Party at Sissy McGinty's on Steinway!
