The Times Ledger hasreported that Astoria's W.C. Bryant High School on 48th St. will be closed at the end of this school year.
Amid a struggle with its teachers union, the city Department of Education has announced plans to close Astoria’s William Cullen Bryant High School, a move western Queens lawmakers have criticized as politically motivated and destructive.
Citing poor academic performance, the DOE identified Bryant, at 48-10 31st Ave., as a persistently low achieving school for the 2010-11 school yearand, under a plan known as transformation, replaced the principal and began to implement institutional reforms. Last year, Bryant had a four-year graduation rate of 57 percent, which put it in the bottom 17 percent of city schools.

My Mom and her 2 brothers(all of blessed memory) all went to Bryant HS
I am not an educator, but many times in poor performing schools, it is the administration who are dysfunctional, casusing it difficult for teachers to create a strong learning enviornment. Put htose teachers and students in a new enviornment and you might be suprised at the results..
IE, charter schools in the brox do this all the time, (kips etc)
Comment by John Hart on March 10, 2012 at 11:57am Completely politically motivated. Here is a link to a petition from a large school going through the same thing that is trying to get the state legislature to intervene and limit the unchecked mayoral control of education policy in the the city. End Mayoral Control of NYC Schools
Comment by Alba S on March 8, 2012 at 1:59pm Bryant is terrible but I don't see how closing the school is going to improve anything for the children who have to go elsewhere.
