Anytime someone raises the question of "do you know what Astoria really needs?". There are two resounding answers:
We wholeheartedly agree that either/both of these would be amazing additions to our burgeoning neighborhood, but for now, we're just going to focus on #1. As one of our members recently pointed out, there's even a form online to request a Trader Joe's in your neighborhood--making our job easier.
This has been brought up on our site before, but let this be the kickoff of our formal campaign to get a Trader Joe's in our hood.
How can you help?
Go to this form on their website to formally request a Trader Joe's.
Suggest a location (ie. the old Blockbuster location on 31st and Ditmars)
Why should you help?
True, Trader Joe's is a chain that could impact smaller, local groceries and bodegas. Arguably, it could encourage them to be more competitive by losing the cans of beans and Hamburger Helper and carrying more of the fresh products we desire like local, organic, and vegetarian options. The great thing about Trader Joe's (beyond their hard-to-find goods) is they buy directly from the suppliers to ensure the lowest possible price to the consumer.

Comment by Harris on February 3, 2012 at 11:39am Good riddance Jonathan. Astoria has always had numerous corporate supermarkets with horrible food selection. Anything that draws people away from Key Food, C Town, Associated, or Trade Fair is a good thing. Those places are small, cramped, dumps with unhealthy foods and exorbitant prices. Trader Joe's is consistently ranked one of the top supermarkets and most ethical. It's headquartered in California, started with a trust from Aldi, which is German-based.
Comment by Yo Sebastian on February 3, 2012 at 11:31am yea, i agree with this guy!! sorta :)
Ridiculous. Fresh, multi-cultural and affordable food has represented the very essence of Astoria for many years. The authors endorse inviting a profit hungry German corporation to complete an assessment to see if their is value for their bottom line? While destroying the local culture? All so new Astoria residents can buy some cheap Chinese canned and frozen items with clever packaging? Please reconsider signing this petition and also think twice about supporting this website, which I thought existed to promote local culture, but sadly has corporate interests and the comforts of the sterile suburbs in mind. This makes me ill to read this, and helps me feel at ease for my decision to move out of Astoria after 10 blissful years.

Comment by Chris Smith on January 30, 2012 at 3:34pm I mean, let's also get rid of McDonald's on 31st because it's going to put all the other restaurants out of business, right?
Comment by Chris Smith on January 30, 2012 at 3:33pm Eric Gordon: THANK YOU. Trader Joe's would indeed have a lot of stiff competition from the established locals. Every store is a little bit tailored to each individual market. I go to TJ's because they have certain things in certain forms that I really can't find anywhere else easily or consistently. They won't out-compete the meat and fish markets. They can't. There isn't a credible threat to Astoria's diversity, TJ's will only improve life for me.
People are missing a huge point here - TJs doesn't sell very fresh meat like you would find at a butcher, fresh fish, and their produce section is not all that great. It's all the other stuff that makes it fantastic. What they do is go to a manufacturer of a product - for this example let's use Stacy's Pita Chips. And then they tell them, we can guarantee you x business if you give us this price. Then you get Stacy's Pita Chips, under TJs brand name, for way cheaper. TJs is also a very ethical big box store, they don't sell overfarmed fish and have a huge vegetarian selection and try to work with local farmers when possible. I for one would much rather buy garlic grown in NJ than China (looking at you Key Food).
Let's not forget about all the jobs it would bring with full health benefits. I know a lot of people in this area could really use a job like that.
And all this talk about "real astorians" vs "transplants" is bullshit; this is New York. Everyone is from somewhere else.
Awesome that the Daily News picked up the story. That should get some attention.
