An interesting study on pet ownership in NYC was recently published by the economists at StatsBee, a column in the NYC Economic Development Corporation blog.

The study found that there are approximately 1.1 million dog and cat pets in NYC--equating to one pet in every three (33%) households. This is understandably far below the national average of 60%.

At least 30 cats and dogs were rescued yesterday from US Pet Discounts on Steinway Street after an all-hands fire broke out in the rear of the store. The blaze required rescuers to cut through the metal security gate at the entrance and cut locks to rescue the caged animals.
