Study: Astoria is Full of Dogs & Cats

An interesting study on pet ownership in NYC was recently published by the economists at StatsBee, a column in the NYC Economic Development Corporation blog.
The study found that there are approximately 1.1 million dog and cat pets in NYC--equating to one pet in every three (33%) households. This is understandably far below the national average of 60%.
However, as the below graphic shows, Astoria is among the City's most pet-populated…

Comedy Newscast Taped Right Here in Astoria
Right here, in the heart of Astoria, I started the SNM (Social News Media) Network: a weekly comedy web/newscast which covers real news stories by using status updates and tweets as "reporting."

A Romantic Valentine's Day in Queens Without Reservations
It's easy to get caught up in today's pseudo-holiday hoopla and buy into overpriced, over-crowded, Manhattan hotspots for an ironic dinner for two. Here are a few pointers for a night out that she'll dig and won't pinch your pocket.

Most of Astoria's top restaurants are doing a pre-fixe and/or reservations. If you don't have a reservation by now, we recommend selecting a place a little under the radar for a unique dinner to remember.
Consider…

Why, 114th Precinct? Why?
Editor's Note: this piece has been heavily edited for grammar and readability. No subjective content was added or removed. We've retained the original version at the bottom of this post. Further, please remember, this is a blog contributed by a member of our community, not the viewpoint of anyone at WLA.

Astoria Thesis - one year later
Hi all,
A year ago I wrote a thesis on Astorians.net and WLA. I passed the class but heard nothing from my professors, so was less than confident in it. (Also, I wanted their comments to clean it up before I showed it to anyone).
My co worker, who recently enrolled in my same program, said my thesis was used as an example of what kind of thesis they would want to write. Very honored - and very conscious that I never shared the final product with those of you who generously…
