New York Has an Astorian to Thank for 'Melo

New York City was a-buzz last night with basketball fans talking about the Knicks first win with their brand new star, Carmelo Anthony.

But 'Melo isn't the the only person Knicks fans have to thank for what may become the team's most promising season in years; the trade agreement between the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks would never have happened if it weren't for Astoria's hometown hero, Donnie…

Oscar Night in Astoria

Astoria is home to two of the biggest East Coast movie studios, as well as the locals who make them. This weekend's 83rd Annual Academy Awards will honor them all; the best films, actors, writers, producers and other artists who helped make this year's movies we love.

It's practically a national tradition to grab your friends and catch the big show, and there are tons of parties happening around the neighborhood in honor of the event, so what are you…

Steinway Then and Now

I first moved to Astoria when I graduated college in 2000. My very first apartment was on 42nd St. and 25th Ave. Some of my most-frequented spots on Steinway Street were Alex Deli, where I'd get a chicken parmesan sandwich for a late night snack; and the more than 30-year-old Italian-owned establishment, Caffe Borbone,…

'The Koch-borough Bridge' Doesn't Have the Same Ring to It

This week, Council Member Vallone issued a statement addressing Mayor Bloomberg's planned project to rename the Queensborough Bridge after former Mayer Ed Koch. Vallone brought up a good point in this WSJ article that this would never happen to the Brooklyn Bridge, so why rename NYC's skyline tribute to Queens?

Holiday Bandit Robs Seventh Local Bank

Astoria's Holiday Bandit has now risen to #1 on the FBI's Most Wanted list. After seven armed robberies since his spree began in December, Ukrainian-born "Mark" Marat Mikhaylich struck again today at the Investors Savings Bank located at 35th and Broadway.

The FBI believes Mikhaylich does not have a getaway vehicle and is instead fleeing on foot to a nearby hideaway. Federal officials are now offering "a significant…
