The Specialized Vita is a great hybrid, designed for women. It's about $500 bucks.
go see The Bicycle Repairman here in Astoria! He's the best and if you purchase from him he does tune-ups for free for 3 years. i have a Jamis hybrid that i love and is pretty lightweight but it was a bit over 600.
