Basically...

For those who don't know, Food Not Bombs is a radical leftist organization based around the food justice movement. The basic principle it operates on is simple: all people have a right to healthy food. Food is a necessity. There are so many starving people, but so much food is thrown out every day in grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants, etc. Food Not Bombs gets food donations from local establishments, cooks it and serves it weekly. Dumpster-diving is another FNB-approved way to find recoverable, good food that would otherwise go to waste.

Food Not Bombs also provides food to those at protests and demonstrations -- hence, the "Not Bombs" part. FNB has a history of supporting progressive social and political movements.

Food Not Bombs serves vegetarian meals only.

I was part of the first FNB group in Houston, circa 1993. I have an archive of information if anyone wants to pick my brain.

A great place to meet is Cronin & Phelan's, just around the corner from Steinway on Broadway. They serve good food, great portions and have a nice selection of beers on tap. The owner Mike Peacock, is very friendly and a wonderful community supporter. He regularly host special events like Toys for Tots, and is open to having community groups meet right at Cronin & Phelan's. There is an indoor space and a quieter outdoor space. It's a pleasant way to hold a meeting and also enjoy food and drinks.

Hi Lauren,

I might be interested in helping to start up an FNB. Let me know how much time it will entail. I'd be interested also in meeting with you and the Bed-Stuy person. Let me know the details.

Hi, I'm originally from Denver and now I'm here in Astoria.

I heard about Food not Bombs from my brother in Denver. He's always finding social action groups and has marched with ACORN, for neighborhood improvement, and is talking about writing articles about social injustice. He will be excited to hear that there is a Food Not Bombs chapter in my neighborhood.

If you are looking for a volunteer cook. I'm a fairly decent cook, and I also know some really great cooks as well that are used to cooking for a crowd. My husband also volunteers at the Trinity Lutheran Church's food pantry. The pantry sometimes has an excess of canned goods. So if you're looking for donations of canned goods, I can check into that.

Trinity Lutheran Church, on 37th Street and 31st Ave, has a full kitchen and dining area and used to cook hot meals on Friday nights, but that program was discontinued this past year. It was a program in collaboration with the Partnership for the Homeless.

If you're looking for a place to serve meals, you might check and see if something can be worked out with Trinity.
