Just took our big boy for his check up and rabies vaccine update and we had another great experience at our vet. I've been taking my pets to Astoria Vet clinic on Steinway for over 20 years and now that we have a pile of dogs and cats we are there quite frequently. I can't say enough about about how wonderful the staff are and they have late night hours and weekends too. Love them!

I've seen some questions about dog runs at Astoria Park, so I'm posting the official city parks website link for dog runs at astoria park (doesnt show exactly where the dog run is, but gives you rules and all that):

http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/AstoriaPark/facilities/dogruns

Dogs are allowed off-leash before 9am and after 9pm -- cant wait for Spring so I can start taking my dog out for a run in the park on the weekends (before 9am) again!

p.s. - i have a great dog-walker in the area if anyone needs a referral...

camp bow wow is great! i can't speak highly enough - stephen, the manager, was my dog walker for 2 years before he opened the camp and my 4-legged beast made a smooth transition ... he is ectoplasm when i get home at night - so happy, so tired, so socialized. stephen & elizabeth (his co-manager) makes it feel like your dog is the only dog in the whole camp; they pay such close attention and provide so much love to the dogs and peace of mind to the humans. can't recommend them enough!

Lorrie, you gave me some good ideas for add-ins.. I tried the cottage cheese and last week the hard boiled eggs.. they loved it!! Thanks!

Wow thats some true dedication. I don't even cook so i think prepackaged dog food is actually the safer option. We do give carrots for treats. They love them! I also use Natural Balance roll as treats too.

Has anyone been to Camp BOW WOW in LIC? They've been open for about 6 months and one of my neighbors went said his dog had an awesome time.

I feed my dogs the following 3 different brands.

• Vets Choice Holistic Health Extension Original Little Bites Dry Dog Food
http://www.vetschoice.com/productinfo.php?productID=1000022

• Evanger's Chicken With Brown Dry Rice Dry Dog Food
http://www.evangersdogfood.com/dog/40117.html

• EVO Red Meat Small Bites Dry Dog Food
http://www.evopet.com/products/default.asp?id=1491

They get mixed together with combinations of the following foods:
• hard boiled eggs
• regular rolled oats
• cottage cheese and/or ricotta
• orzo
• elbow macaroni
• mozzarella, cheddar, Monterey Jack, low salt Swiss, low salt muenster cheeses
• creamy peanut butter
• whole wheat bread
• wheat germ
• boiled/broiled/baked chicken thighs and turkey breast with the skin
• virgin olive, canola, safflower oils
• broiled calves liver
• broiled and/or baked lean ground lamb and lean ground beef
• unflavored yoghurt
• homemade chicken, turkey and beef stock
• steamed salmon
• steamed white and/or brown rice
• boiled and/or baked potato
• steamed and/or raw vegetables (green beans, tomatoes, sugar snap peas, carrots, celery, broccoli, garbanzo beans, cauliflower, cucumber)
• fresh and/or steamed fruits (apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, cantaloupe)

So that mealtimes can be as strange as cubed steamed chicken, yoghurt and dry dog food. Or chopped hard boiled egg, ricotta and dry dog food. Or cubed broiled calves liver, stewed pears and dry dog food.

I do this because I have one dog who would rather starve himself rather than eat just plain dry dog food. My vet and I were actually thinking he might be an anorexic dog, because he even refused dog treats. But once (around 6 years ago) I started making it interesting for him, he's put on weight and maintains his muscle strength. This is critical for him as he was diagnosed with a nail bed malignancy when he was only 6 months old and he needs to be on his weight target to keep him going.

BTW, I also add supplements to the dogs diets:

• Vet Solutions AllerG-3 Omega-3 Fatty Acid Small Breeds 250 Caps
http://www.vetmedsrx.com/store/p/258-AllerG-3-Fatty-Acid-For-Small-Breeds-60-Capsules.html

• NuVet Plus Canine Health Supplement
https://www.NuvetLabs.com/order/default.asp?sponsorid=#

• Pet-Tabs Calcium for Dogs

I have 3 dogs also.. I was feeding them canned food but one of my babies (Lily) developed bladder stones.. 3 times! I finally found a wonderful vet who came to the house and gives Lily accupuncture treatments.. He also changed their diets to none grain.. I now cook at home for them. Lily has lost weight and the dogs have more energy. 2 of them are seniors..

I'm trying to find a non beef product for one of my dogs to see if it helps with her skin condition. Plus the nutripet was highly recommended by a friend who used to feed canidae and has switched. I'm doing 50/50 to ease them in and to finish up my canidae and all is going well. Plus i get a large bag shipped free direct to my door which is sooooo nice since i have three dogs!
