WLA?! Book Club

A monthly book club that reads and discusses books that reflect the New York experience. Discussions will examine the works from both a literary perspective and as locals. How is our city shown through the author's eyes?

Members: 80
Latest Activity: Nov 8, 2013

Next Meeting is 10/27 at Indigo!

The next book club meeting will be on Tuesday October 27.
Please RSVP here.

October's selection is Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis.

"Michael McGill is a burned-out private detective who suddenly becomes enlisted by an army of presidential goons to retrieve the Constitution of the United States, but not the one we all know about. This would be the real Constitution (the one with invisible amendments) created by some of the Founding Fathers as a fallback for their great experiment. Along the way, McGill gains a polyamorous sidekick named Trix, gets scared to death by what men do with warm salty water, and descends into a world where crime, sex, and madness all seem to be the same thing. I just finished reading Good Grief by Lolly Winston and it was absolutely hilarious! Everywhere I read this book people commented on the permanent smile that was plastered on my face =)

What is everyone reading now? Any recommendations for another "feel good/happy" book?

Would anyone like to organize some thing soon?

Hey all, new to the group.  I have noticed nothing has happened here since last November.  I am a bit of a sci-fi/fantasy fan myself...but always looking for something new to read.

I don't know...Jenny- what do you think? Should we try to set up a tentative time/date and see how many people could make it?

Do you think think we need a minimun number of people to get this up and running?

Hi Mary, I was looking for a book club in Astoria. Never been part of one either but I have similar times available evenings after 7 and Sunday work for me.

I have never been part of a book club but I'm willing to try to set a date and location up so we can discuss ideas. Jenny thanks for offering help. Does anyone have any dates/times that are not good? I will not be available until after 7:00 weeknights but am willing to do something on Sundays.

I have been organizing a book club for the mommy group in Astoria. I am happy to help someone do it here also. Big shoes to fill since Kevin always chose such interesting NYC based books which led to in depth discussions...
