My lease ends in two months and I want to stay in Astoria. Where would you recommend me to look? What are some cool things about your neighborhood? Thanks for discussing with me!
I live on the east end of 30th avenue and like it because of its slower pace from other parts of Astoria. Don't get me wrong, I love going to get down, but I HATE being woken up by horns, sirens, yelling, etc and this part of 30th is perfect for that--close proximity to trains (R/V & N/W) as well as lots of bars and restaurants, but still in a residential area. The lack of alternate side parking is great, too. Good luck w/ your search!
Right now I'm a block away from the intersection of 31st and Steinway, which is very convenient and surprisingly quiet. I'll only be there for two more weeks, though, and I'll be moving way up there to the Ditmars neighborhood just south of the Con Ed plant, which is less convenient but much more affordable.
Used to live above Flo cafe on 30th ave and 38th street. My back bathroom was like a club on the weekends. Music blaring. It was funny at first but then got ridiculous. Now i'm on 31st ave and 35th street. So much nicer. Quieter, can hear birds chirping in the morning. Half way between broadway and 30th ave, two major streets that have everything you need. Close walk to the N/W or the R/V. Plus some of the best food is on 31st ave (jj's, zenon, il bambino, bareburger, chocolate spoon)
Ran is right though about alternate side parking. Its 4 days a week here and very annoying. Couldn't take it anymore so just rented a garage.
We live on 23rd ave off the Ditmars stop and we love it. Close enough to Ditmars and 31st street which has everything you need including friendly resturants, stores, botiques, but still feels like a residential area almost small townish. And still close enough to walk (or quick train ride) to 30th ave if we are in the mood for a little faster pace.
Thank you all for the advice. I finally found a place! It's a 20 min walk to the Ditmars stop but this was my favorite neighborhood. If I'm lucky I'll catch the local bus in the morning on my way in to work. Otherwise I'll walk to the train or for those cold snowy mornings I may want to take the express bus I've heard a little about.
