Oh my astorians! I was in the Trader Joe's in Union Square today and I just long for a Trader Joe's in Astoria. I know there is one in queens but it's really difficult to get there without a car. I wonder if we all write to them maybe we could persuade someone. Maybe it's just a dream but can we try? Go to http://www.traderjoes.com/static/contact_us.html and tell them what you think.
I agree, I would love a TJ's in Astoria..There is such great space around that I don't see why it can't happen. Yeah the spot in Woodhaven is a bit of a way to go without a car. I usually rent a zipcar so that I can go get my goods.
Would be fantastic. Some others mentioned a TJ in a previous conversation. The problem we face is many desirable retailers (Borders, Barnes & Noble, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc) won't even consider Astoria because the neighborhood doesn't exactly align with the target demographic.
I was told by a business district representative that there have been many major unsuccessful pushes over the last couple of years--especially to fill the void of Dr. J's on Steinway, but desirable retailers are avoiding it like the plague. It's definitely moving in that direction, but until then, I think we're gonna have to get used to our existing 10 supermarkets and 1 bookstore.
That is good to know Ryan..I already sent my request to Trader Joe's on their website.
I sometimes wonder what they consider a target demographic? How many more cell phone stores or 99 cents stores can this amazing neighborhood have? I am a bit done with those.
I know! The spot where The Cup used to be (now, the defunct cafe Bizarre) would be a great spot. Not only has Bizarre closed, but the re-opened Italian place next to it, Compagna, has also shut its doors. Plus, on the other side, there is Island which looks like its on its last breath...It seems logical, no?
