Why Leave Astoria?!

Does anyone know where to get good Chinese food in Astoria? I'm a big fan of chinatown chinese food, manhattan/flushing but also enjoy good american chinese food. But so far everything here is pretty awful. I can't believe there is not a good place around here so any recommendations, place/dishes?

I always order from No.1 Chinese Kitchen, (718) 626-6636. It's been my favorite spot for Shrimp with Garlic Sauce for years.

I also order from No. 1 when I'm looking for inexpensive delivery-type Chinese food, but if I want something that's better quality I go to J J Chan's Garden. (75-21 31st Ave; 718-898-6686; www.jjchansgarden.com) It's a little farther away, not really in Astoria anymore, but it's worth the trip and it's a lot easier to get there than going all the way to Manhattan or Flushing. If you don't have a car you can take the Q66 along Northern.

Nice, two recommendations for No 1 Chinese kitchen. I'll definitely give it a try. I'll have to give JJ Chan's a try also, even though once i'm in the car i can just go to flushing. Nothing like some roasted meats and some hot noodle soup. I wonder if JJ Chan's will deliver to Astoria? The menu looks really good.
Thanks for the recommendations guys. If anyone one else has some places keep them coming.

Wah-Fung on Steinway between Ditmars Blvd and 21st Avenue. It's good for delivery and use fresh ingredients. Check them out on yelp--their reviews are excellent, and it's super cheap!

I like Nuevo Jardin de China (Cuban & Chinese) as well as China Pagoda (Halal Chinese)

Thanks for the recommendations all. I tried No. 1 last night. Got the beef with garlic sauce. It was good for a hole in the wall chinese take out place but not really what I was looking for. I think Emily's suggestion of JJ chans looks more my style. Will definitely give Wah- Fung a try but its kind of deep in the Mars compared to where i'm at (near bareburger). I only see 4 reviews on yelp and some are pretty old. Still i'll try anyplace once.
Ran - great job with this site. Don't know about those places though. I can't find a chinese place to do chinese right, forget about a halel place that makes chinese or a cuban place that makes chinese food. When I first moved to Astoria I'd crack up when I'd see these combo places. Nuevo might have been one of my worst meals in Astoria. Fried rice was bad, who messes up fried rice?
I'm totally hijacking my own thread but since we are talking food how about the best gyro? Gyromania was hands down the best gyro I had around here. I've tried a bunch. Since it has closed I have not been able to find a replacement. Ramano's is bad, Bz Grills is bad, pita pan is good for a gyro like mikky d burger is good for a burger. Gyromania had nice chunks of meat that they would throw in the broiler to make a little more crisp. Fresh lettuce and ripe tomatoes.

I remember the first time I saw a Chinese place that also has tacos. Only in NY.

While in No. 1 a girl walked in and asked for cheese fries. I just looked down and thought to myself if they have cheese fries i'm going home. Luckily cheese fries were not on the menu.

Former No.1 fan here, but only because I moved to Broadway area. Now, I LOVE Hong Kong Chinese Food. It's on Broadway. The Salt and Pepper shrimp is amazing! Soo good and open pretty late. 718-706-8482.
