Please come join our first day of public paddling in Hallets Cove, just north of the main exhibit grounds of Socrates Sculpture Park, and just up the road from from the Noguchi Museum.
This is FREE family-friendly fun each Sunday from 1pm-5pm (weather dependent)! It's a great little detour for adults enjoying art, dining, and shopping in Astoria. Bikers will appreciate that we're right on the forming waterfront greenway!
We're also debuting our four new Zest super loooooooong Ocean Kayaks, sponsored by boathouse founder Erik Baard's $2,000 donation from his LaGuardia Community College speaker's fee. Check out these boats, which are new to New York Harbor!
Just pop over, sign a release form, and take a little paddle in the relative shelter of the cove. You must know how to swim well enough to remain calm should you fall in, but every participant wears a life vest (sized for infants through large adults). Our sit-on-top boats are also easy to re-enter, and we sometimes provide a canoe. Our crew will walk you through it, and mastery of the basics will enable you to participate in our longer harbor tours in June and throughout the summer!
Volunteers to make it all happen are always needed too! You needn't be an ace paddler to help. Our crew works with the public to clean the beach, and individual tasks include keeping lists, checking that waivers are filled out properly, answering general questions, keeping a safety watch, sharing a boat with the public, helping people onto the beach, and much more. You'll be a great aid, and make new friends!
If you can come earlier or stay later, set up and boat hauling crews are absolutely critical. Please email email@example.com with VOLUNTEER in the subject line to join the crew ahead of time, though spontaneous pick-up help is always welcome on the event day.
